Got a phone call an hour before our booking for 7.30pm to be told there was no chicken OR beef left and if we came the only meals on offer would have been pork or chilli. Decided to still go as we had been looking forward to Mexican all day. Go to the restaurant and we all proceeded to melt from the absolute heat inside and had to fan ourselves with the dirty menus. There were only 1 other group in the restaurant so don’t know why they ran out of food. Deciding to power on, we thought let’s just start with a sangria to cool down and start to enjoy our evening. Then we were told, “oh, sorry, we aren’t doing sangria tonight!!!” Game over. What an absolute waste of our time. Is the food great. Who knows. We left and I highly recommend you give this place a hard miss.
Myself and a friend both locals had dinner here for the first time and we loved everything about it. Nice cozy atmosphere . Our meals we had the house special Enchiladas and chicken nachos ...both were terrific, authentic and generous portions and good value. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient . We would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to coming back again
The food was fresh and tasty although menu had only a few items. Service very slow -orders were mixed up and drink arrived after main course because l had been given the order for another person. Was told when paying they had been training a staff member who perhaps required more supervision .
Mexicola Cantina is a restaurant with large servings of tasty food at reasonable prices. The restaurant however is let down by terrible service which takes all the gloss away from what should be a great family night. Not a single positive to say about the service throughout the evening. Unenthusiastic, forgetful, slow, meandering, disinterested and unapologetic. For a place with only 8tables having wait 20min for water and then 25min for 2 bottles of Corona after asking twice were two simple examples. The food is the winner however the staff let the place down.
Our meals arrived promptly, though we were surprised by the small portion sizes and the men at the table ended up ordering seconds. The meals did not come with any sides, just two small tacos each. For dessert, we all enjoyed churros, though the sauces were very sweet. The total bill for my meal and my daughter's came to $63 NZD, which we felt was a bit expensive for what we received. Despite this, we had a great evening overall. I would recommend booking a table in advance, as the restaurant tends to get busy. It is centrally located, making it easy to grab a taxi after your meal. For those with kids, it is best to go early to beat the crowds.
