The Depot on Darby - COOKS HILL

It had been a long time since I had spent some time working in Newcastle. My memory had been that Darby Street was the place to go for restaurants and cafes. Twenty seven years later , I was impressed to see the number and variety of eateries in the street. The Depot was a good choice for lunch. Very good and attentive staff. Food and coffee was of a high standard. Loved it!

Having enjoyed dinner, we wanted to finish off with dessert and thought the teenagers would love to try the famous freak shakes. We were greeted and accommodated as a large group. Not all of the ingredients were available for all of the shakes but the staff did well to make adjustments. The shakes are a work of art and were delicious. The staff happily split the bill which is a real plus. A nice way to finish the evening.

I have been to this restaurant before and was just as good if not better! The service was second to none. Polite and courteous staff and nothing is a problem. The meals were fantastic. I had the Scotch fillet which was cooked to perfection and lovely and tender. Everything on the plate was gone let's just say. My wife had the salmon which was also lovely. No issues when asked to have it cooked through and came out as she asked it to be. The date night deal was great value and will return. If you get the chance try the freak shakes. I went back the next day to have one. Awesome!

We stopped in here on a sunny Sunday and sat out the front on the footpath. Service from polite, efficient waitresses was excellent. I had a beer and a grilled chicken burger, my wife had a deep fred calamari salad and a glass of wine. Both meals arrived promptly, were well cooked and well presented. The calamari in particular showed that the restaurant had put a lot of thought into the variety of tastes and textures needed to be interesting in a salad - bean shoots, chilli, dressing, leaves, onion - combined magnificently. Cost for the whole meal $58.

Fantastic. Took my daughters and met my brother for dinner. The girls are fussy eaters so we decided on the tapas menu. The waitress was lovely and very understanding and helpful. The sliders and potatoes were great for the kids. They don't normally like seafood other than fish but they really enjoyed the soft shell crab. I loved the zucchini flowers. Cost just over $120 for four people with a drink each which is reasonable for the high quality of the food and impeccable service. In the words of that great poet Arnold , "I'll be back."
