From the outside it's a cool cute looking place, even on the inside! However when I walked inside to check in there sat the owner and their family in the lobby area chairs looking at me. The lobby is DEAD quiet like creepy quiet!!! Awkward...... I booked through snap travel and the young girl said she couldn't find my reservation and called the owner over. He found it not that this hotel full. Seemed like they only have a couple rooms filled but then again beartooth and the ne entrance to Yellowstone is closed so currently this town is struggling. I would've liked to eat at the restaurant but there wasn't a SINGLE person there my entire stay. Awkward. It didn't even seem like the restaurant was open even though the open sign was lit. The hotel itself is older could use some updating carpet cleaning even though the rooms are recently renovated and really nice!!!! Do note!!!!! There is literally no cellular service! Like in the entire town. If you want connection to the outside world you either have to pick up a land line or call round whispering to people what's the Wi-Fi password as if it's a big secret. They used to have a pool and a hot tub not sure when they took it out disappointing that they took out since it was the highlight that I don't think anyone else in town has. I think some soft country music in the lobby, and staff being present but not lounging around or hanging out would be great a start
We were driving through to go to Yellowstone and stopped for food. This was the only place open as far as restaurants, the gas station was open also. We walked in and noticed an awful stench in the front of building however the restaurant portion was in the back, we figured it wasn't to unbearable given how hungry we were. We we got in the back of the building to the restaurant there were fly's all over. They sat us immediately and grab our drinks and disappeared for about 20 minutes then another random staff member collected our drinks for a refill and his fingers where dirty. I excused myself to the restroom which was down stairs towards the front entrance, as I walk down stair it was a creepy feeling as you walk into a large dark room which has doors for the restrooms which lights were motion detected but failed to detect. I had to use the light on my phone to see into the men's restroom, at this point I noticed the toilets were not cleaned with feces still in them. I turned around and walked back up stairs still having to use my phone for light. When I got back to the restaurant my food was ready, we ate, we paid, we left. I would never recommend this place to anyone. I am sure the stench was coming from the restrooms, and I am sure the fly's did also. If I wasn't a traveler I would report this to be inspected, I wouldn't know who to contact for it.
Flies! Soggy fries and the smell of mothballs!!! Only game in Cook City in late November.
I do not understand all of the negative reviews. My husband and I have been here for four days. Our room and bathroom were spotless. Check in was a breeze. Yes the lodge is older and could use some updating. The carpets in the lobby, stairs, and hallways need a deep cleaning but the carpet in our room was perfect. We have a beautiful view from our window. The walls are thin and you will hear your neighbors but it's not bad. The bed is nice and comfy. What people need to remember is that Cooke city is a tiny rustic town. There are no fancy hotels up here. So if you have those standards than look for another city to stay in. We have had a great stay at the Soda Butte and would gladly stay here again.
The smell, the dirt, the soiled carpets (no way were we going barefoot) , the dingy lobby, the 2 inch gap at the bottom of our door to the hall, the menus that were stuck together (I refused to eat there after seeing that), the small and recycled hand written envelop left on our bed requesting housekeeping tip (which was not provided due to COVID and I'm ok with that), the small and soiled piece of paper handed to us at check in with internet password hand written on it, the paper thin walls (yes, we heard EVERYTHING) and did I mention the smell? We had to seek out a candle at the gift shop across the street to mask the smell. Ok so I get the fact that it's a small lodge in the middle of no where in Cooke City, MT, but that should not be an allowance for the above listed issues. We spent a lot of time researching hotels for our trip and the pictures on the website were VERY misleading as were the reviews listed at the time reservations were made. Unfortunately there were no other rooms available for miles and we were tired from our travels so we stayed. I convinced myself that we were camping just to be able to get some sleep. Not to mention, reading the review regarding the mice that was posted the day before we arrived.....all we could do was laugh. I will say the bathroom in our room was clean and the staff was very nice. While we were not expecting the Lodge of the Four Seasons, we were expecting at best what was advertised on their website. My advise, book a room at the Super 8 across the street!
