I came to the Chilliwack Swiss Chalet a while back with my dear mother. We were both somewhat excited because, up until this visit, neither of us had ever been to a Swiss Chalet restaurant. After seeing commercials for many years touting their "fall off the bone" ribs, I was very much looking forward to sinking my teeth into some. Unfortunately, by the end of our visit, we were quite disappointed.First things first, the interior of Swiss Chalet is your standard modern family restaurant-type setting. That is to say, the interior is nothing more than various shades of brown. I've said it before, but it merits repeating again: the lack of personality in any of these family restaurants is a bit of a problem. I swear, they (Swiss Chalet, Ricky's, ABC Country, White Spot) must all hire the same interior decorator. If you blind-folded me and brought me into any one of these eateries, I wouldn't be able to distinguish one from the other.Now, to be clear, I'm not saying the food is necessarily all the same. I mean, sure, any of the above restaurants' menus feature many of the same items -- Caesar salad, chicken, mashed potatoes & turkey dinner, sandwiches, etc. -- but they also have their "signature" dishes. White Spot has their "award winning" burgers (what award?); ABC Country has their "country comforts"; Ricky's has their "famous" buttermilk pancakes; and, finally, Swiss Chalet has their famous ribs. I'm not totally convinced on how any of these sets them apart from the pack; after all, ABC Country also boasts about their ribs. . .but I digress. How was the Chilliwack Swiss Chalet experience?Well, the customer service was good. We were greeted with a smile and seated promptly, so no complaints there. I ordered a garlic prawn appetizer and a half rack of ribs as my main while my mom ordered the half chicken dinner. The prawns, I will say, were cooked nicely and were ample (8 to 10). Where the appetizer fell flat with me was in the garlic butter sauce. The poor prawns were literally swimming in it. Doing prawns in a garlic sauce is something of a fine balance because prawns themselves have a nice flavour -- almost a sweetness -- to them that you don't want to overpower with any type of sauce. Sadly, that subtle prawn flavour was lost in a sea of garlic butter. As for my main, the side Caesar and bun were nice (crisp lettuce with decent dressing, warm bun), but the ribs were shockingly disappointing. I know Swiss Chalet prides themselves on marinating their ribs for 24 hours and then slow-roasting them for at least 2.5 hours, but these ribs just weren't that great. Despite the slow cook and long marinade process, my ribs were kind of tough and unimpressive. I remember telling my mom that I'd had better tasting ribs out of SuperValu (ouch). My mom's chicken was fine, though she felt it was a bit small.All in all, I was rather underwhelmed by my first visit to a Swiss Chalet. I recognize, being a family restaurant, that they have to appeal to a wide clientel and that may impact food quality for some items; however, if your ribs are the big selling point, they should be better executed. If one can say they've had better ribs at a grocery store, then you know there are problems. Maybe it was just an off night?FOOD: 2/5SERVICE: 3/5VALUE: 2.5/5RECOMMENDATION: I think there are better places for ribs in Chilliwack; however, Swiss Chalet is "family friendly" and is popular with the locals. Very concern when I was waiting for my order at the take out counter on July 20,2017 a dog was barking in the kitchen is this comply with Company policy? Also didn't receive my receipt for making comments.
