The Portage - Chicago

I really enjoy this restaurant, but there is an issue with the seating arrangements. If you are seated in the middle tables, you are constantly being bumped into as people pass by. When we requested to move to a corner table, we were informed that it was already taken by a newly arrived party. The situation improved after two families with toddlers left (the noise from the children is not the restaurant's fault). I have previously asked to be moved to the back room on another visit, but was told it was not set up. Although I love this restaurant and wish it success, they need to improve the atmosphere to make it less chaotic and more conducive to conversation.

Thankfully, we decided to sit in the small back room instead of the main dining area at the restaurant. If we hadn't, I don't think we would have been able to hear each other or enjoy our conversation during dinner. The food, from the French fries appetizer to the salads and entrees, was excellent. The house-made ice cream was especially delicious. The tables were quite close together, making it easy to hear conversations at nearby tables and for others to hear ours.

Cozy and intimate, The Portage is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. While reservations are not always necessary, the restaurant is small so it's best to make one to secure your spot. My husband and I recently introduced some friends to this place and they loved it as much as we do. We enjoy sitting at the bar in the front room, although it can get a bit noisy when full due to its size. If you're looking for a stylish, charming, and energetic atmosphere with a diverse menu, The Portage is the place to go. The staff is friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.
