Brasserie de L'Ours - Chateau-D'Oex

Nothing looked more inviting in the snow than this luminous brasserie with its copper tanks of house-brewed beer. We had reserved a large and central table which was easily accessible for our handicapped friend and enjoyed good service and great food. Two shared a special fondu with bacon (which we all tried) and the others had chicken curry (wonderfully served with rice, papdum, and chutney) and pot-au-feu (boiled beef with vegetables.) The beer was a great success, as were all the dishes, but the desserts were exceptional--some had 2! Macaroons with double cream was irresistible as was th Coupe de Colonel. Service was a bit haphazard, but it did not matter as we had no rush--our rooms were across the street.

Cosy french brasserie atmosphere. almost. for this centrally-located restaurant. Their beer vats are right there in the dining room, and you should try one of each: blond, weiss, ale. Lots of cheese dishes as you might expect but also some brasserie-type foods too (souris d'agneau for example) as well as lots of salads for a better-that-average price. Had a lovely evening, lots of ambiance.

The food was good, and the service was speedy - probably because the village was quiet overall. The waitresses were attentive and efficient, and the free salad (unlimited - self-service from a trolley!) was superb. The central outdoor setting might make it noisy in peak season, but we found it relaxing and quiet. There is an indoor option for those who prefer it. We would happily go again (and ate there several times during our stay,) and would recommend it.

We have been eating here regularly for many years and have always loved the menu and the staff. And it has lovely decor and atmosphere and is right in the centre of the village. But for some reason, perhaps there is new management or a new chef, but the new menu is not so nice at all, all the waitstaff are new, and the food varies from just about okay to terrible. Our vegetarian friends had boiled linguini with no sauce, and a few bland frozen vegetables and left it after a few mouthfuls. We were embarrassed as we had told our friends what great food they always have there. Make that HAD. We will give the Brasserie a miss from now on, which is a great shame. It was also quite an expensive meal too, comparable with the village's top restaurant.

Given the reasonable prices, the food is very good and an excellent value. The craft beers are excellent. Great if you want to eat in a non-touristy local Swiss environment. Service is always fast and efficient. Bread basket could use an upgrade, however. Have been eating there off and on for 20 years, and I'm quite finicky when it comes to food.
