The food was adequate as was the service, but it was nothing special. The bartender was the cook and waiter. The menu was typical of what we found at other bar/restaurants on the Nivernais canal but the restaurant interior didn't have the charm of the lock-side tables along the canal. We found the loud TV a distraction. The "menu" tonight was 1) boiled eggs with a spoon of mayonnaise on top, or sliced tomatoes, or charcuterie2) chicken with a sauce, or entrecôte steak (+ 1,20€). There may have been another option.3) cheese4) packaged ice creamWe opted to skip the cheese and ice cream and our menu was priced at 12,50€ and took about two hours.
La Flambée is a small restaurant located on a square in the center of town. Like so many French towns, it is located at or near the top of a hill. The walk up the steep street and a flight of stairs is worth the effort. La Flambée is guarded by possibly the flattest-faced dog I have ever seen. He looks you over as you enter, gives you his approval, and lets you pass. The restaurant is small and intimate. The food is simple, good tasting and hearty. The service prompt and friendly. The house wine delicious. When we went to settle our bill, I was sure much had been left out. The total was so low! The restaurant is small and reservations might be wise. We had been traveling by canal boat and received a recommendation from a near-by lock keeper who also called ahead and made our reservations. She was spot on in her recommendation. If you are traveling by boat, there are multiple moorings at the base of the town and it's only a short walk up to the restaurant. There is also a fine boulangerie near the restaurant where you can get your morning baguette.
