Like many of the reviews previously, this appears to be a family run place. The owner (an old man) was lovely and really welcoming. His daughter spoke very good English. The food was delicious and we both had a starter and main course plus drinks for less than 40 euros. The drinks in this place are really cheap too. The restaurant appears to be open for lunch and evening meals. If you're in Cannes, give this place a try. You will not be disappointed!
While visiting my hometown of Cannes, I couldn't help but go to this restaurant for some great Chinese/Vietnamese food. As always, I left with a full belly and was not disappointed.Location: You will have to specifically look for this location, as it is not located in a very busy part of town. If you are by the bus station, the best is to walk up the Rue Georges Clemenceau, and after a 10 min walk, you'll run into Vinh Phat on the right. Quality: truly one of the most authentic Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant in the area. The dishes are fresh, very tasty and the selection is plentiful. My favorites are the soups, with choices of Pho, the traditional Vietnamese beef soup (pronounced Pheu), Wonton soup, and Pekinese soup, a variation of the hot & sour. The Nems are also delicious, as well as the steamed appetizers. The entrees are also very tasty, and you can have your choices of beef, chicken, pork, duck and seafood dishes.Service: This is one of the things that makes the place a gem. Interestingly, I've been coming to Vinh Phat for over 25 years, and the server has always been the owner, who is now an old man, and I still don't know his name! His french has not improved in the years I have come, but he understands. If you don't speak French, just be patient, point at what you want (all dishes are translated in English on the menu) and smile. He seems a bit on the grumpy side, but he's a fixture at Vinh Phat! I guess you'll either enjoy it or not.Prices: most dishes are in the €5 to €8 range, and you can eat to your heart's content relatively cheaply. Considering the prices of menus in Cannes, this is definitely a few notches under.Overall, if you are in the mood for Asian, then this is the place for you. There is another Chinese restaurant in Cannes, and while it is better located and pretty good, it is for me a destination only when Vinh Phat is closed. The decor is basic, the ambiance basic, but the food is great. Enjoy!
I think this is the best asiatic restaurant I have visited. Cannes is not the easiest place to find a good restaurant, but this is top class. The cooking is delicious, unforgettable, and obviously home made by a very competant chef. The service is professional and friendly, the customers are obviously all regulars. In short excellent.
My family and I found this restaurant soon after it opened, about 25 years ago, and we have faithfully returned ever since. After moving away from Cannes, I have unfortunately not been able to dine there as often, but as I was i Cannes for a few days, I seized the opportunity and my wife and I had a wonderful meal there. The owner, sporting a few more grey hairs than the last time I saw him, recognized me, even though it had been about 6 years since my last meal there. I thought that was neat.I frankly do not understand "Sophie"'s review, and, having had Vietnamese food in many countries in the world, perhaps think that she and her guest are not familiar with good vietnamese food. Because, for the most part, and as the name suggests, Vinh Phat is a Viet restaurant, and not Chinese. But suggesting that the food was horrible is absolutely untrue. The restaurant is quite small, and I do agree that a reservation is necessary on weekends, especially Saturday night and Sunday lunch. There are about 20 or so tables, which can be moved around to accommodate party sizes. The service is primarily done by the owner, and true, if the restaurant is full, do not expect to be in and out. Since I have eaten at Vinh Phat, my favorites have always been the Pekinese soup (much like a hot & sour) and the traditional nems. I ordered both of these on my last visit, and was absolutely not disappointed. The quality has remained excellent, and amazingly constant throughout the years. My wife ordered Pho. I did not realized they had Pho, as I never ordered it before, but have since discovered the dish, and love it. She let me taste it, and it was delicious. I have made Pho on several occasions, and as you may know, to get the flavor right is tricky business. Well, they sure got it right. I do not understand how someone could say the nems were not good. Again, I have sampled Vietnamese nems in many Asian restaurants, and Vinh Phat's, in my opinion, rank to the top. Nice, and crispy, and full of flavor. We followed this with a spicy duck dish that was very good. We finished with an apple flambée desert, which was also very good. To conclude, we shared a sake, which, I must warn, comes in a special cup that has a picture of a naked person inside. It is only visible while the liquid is present, and could be shocking if you are offended by this sort of thing.Overall, if you like Vietnamese food, Vinh Phat will not let you down. The location is indeed poor, the decor is nothing to write home about, the owner/server did not graduate from a top server school and does his best, and so you might be there a while. But your stomach will not regret your patience, trust me. The food is simply great. this is a hidden gem in the myriad of restaurants in Cannes, but one you must not avoid if you want good Asian food. Enjoy!
Much as we love eating French food, desperate for some far eastern cuisine and recommended to this restaurant. By far the best of its type in Cannes as far as we were concerned. Great service, huge choice of food and good wine. The spring rolls were some of the tastiest we have ever eaten and our main courses also delicious. Very reasonably priced too. Small restaurant and plenty of people dining from the Far East which was a good sign. We are so pleased to have found this place and shall return often
