We first ate and stayed here 28 years ago on our first trip to Italy and Fontanelle made a big impression on us then. We returned with friends 5 years ago for lunch and throughly enjoyed it. Today, we ate Keith the friend we visited 28 years ago and we all left commenting how nothing had changed in terms of quality, freshness or service. We started with the antipasto and bruschetta accompanied by the riso tartufatta. Each mouthful bursting with flavour. Portions are well sized sometimes it feels like they set it for trenchermen and here they weren’t. Wines by the glass are available we had a Grechetto which was sumptuous and a Montefalco Rosso. This was followed by the mixed grille and scottadino lamb (both on a brazier to keep it warm) and a perfectly cooked tagliatta with ruccola and grano. Crescionda (them typical chocolate cake from Spoleto) completes our meal. We sat out on the lovely terrace and savoured both the food and long views. Service was attentive and we felt unrushed and pampered. A lovely afternoon.
We stayed a week in Campello and went to le Fontanelle twice not for convenience but because we loved the place so much. It is a fantastic family run restaurant offering local specialities perfectly prepared not least tartuffo (truffles) than will change you choice of food entirely for only a few extra euros. Our first dinner the 2 of us was guided by the chef/owner and her English was very helpful and charming to help us decide what to chose. We went with a couple of friends 3 days later for dinner and it was just as nice with her son in charge of the restaurant and kitchen that evening. Excellent food, very reasonable prices, lovely hosts and a very traditional auberge setting made an unforgettable experience.
