Contribuiți la feedbackWe love Câmara do Lobos and try to visit when we are in Funchal it is a beautiful day outside nad great for lunch! We stopped in Espadeiro because we haven't been there yet. Just in case you didn't know, this fihing village is the house of Espada (Scabbard Table) and Poncha! I chose Scabbard Fish with Prawns and my husband had Squid. Both were perfectly cooked adn we decided to have dessert, also my was Chocolate Mousse and was the Passionfruit Panacotta. The service is very good, and the young man looking after us was very knowledgeable. A nice restaurant and one to which we will return.
We went to dinner at our first night and enjoyed it. How We Were On A B
Welcome to this charming restaurant right at the historic port, excellent seafood and great recommendations from friendly knowledge new team that have recently taken over. Very recommended.
I would frequent this restaurant almost on a daily basis on my walks from Funchal to Câmara de Lobos and I loved their delicious salads. Unfortunately, my experience today has made me take the decision to never return again; I placed my order for a...salad, as I usually do, however, I normally order one of their smoothies (milkshakes, as they call it) but I wasn’t in the mood for one today and decided to only order the salad. A short while later the waiter came along and asked me whether I was having anything to drink which I declined and he asked whether I am sure that I did not want anything to drink so I told him that I did not really want anything to drink, pointed towards my 1.5l of water and said that I am sure and even have some water if I got thirsty. He proceeded to inform me that it was contrary to Portuguese law to consume anything inside the establishment that had not been sold by them. At first, I thought he was joking but soon realised that he was serious when he said “you must know this right”. He went on to add that their establishment is humane enough to allow the items inside the restaurant but cannot be consumed there. As a lawyer myself, I am quite sure that any such law perhaps refers to the sale and consumption of alcohol, which this is not, and I could also understand the reasonableness of a law preventing one from consuming food and related products inside establishments that would otherwise deprive the establishment of their income but be that as it may, this is water, and I could have quite easily ordered a glass of water from the tap which I would not have to pay for either but instead I had just indicated that I did not want anything to drink and I had not even consumed any of the bottled water inside their restaurant. Surely logic should prevail in how you treat a regular customer. What is quite hypocritical, if anything, of the restaurant is that two days prior to this, the very same waiter had told me that their chef works 7 days a week and 12 hours a day, and when I was seemingly surprised that such long working hours are permissible in law, he responded saying it is illegal for the restaurant to do that but she needs the money and they circumvent the law by paying her extra wages for the overtime that she works and that they pay her in cash so as to avoid any tax deductions. In other words, it is circumstantial, as to when they respect the law and when they don’t.
Lovely lunch with terrific seafood (Lapas for me) and fun, friendly service. A highlight of our time in Madeira!
