If you know nothing about Japanese food, this place will not disappoint. For all others, I suggest just giving up on Washington and going somewhere that Japanese food is understood and appreciated (if not Tokyo, then New York). I had great expectations, but all that I got were great disappointments. Food quality was less than average, staff understanding of Japanese food was low, and despite dining alone, there was little effort on the part of the staff to make even the smallest attempt at conversation. Worse....some were eating their dinner in full view of the customers. May be great by Washington standards....but I would give it a big raspberry (at best).
Chef Special Sashimi Plate was awesome, sake was very good, and service was outstanding. Definitely try the Toro (fatty tuna) sashimi small plate (6 pcs). The Spicy Green Mussels are outstanding as well. Use the valet parking too!
I love sushi. I try to enjoy it wherever I go. I have not eaten in Japan, but have eaten in most major (and several minor) metropolitan areas in the US. We hoped for a delicious meal at Sushi Ko but it was just a gamble we mostly went there because closer places (to convention center area) were closed on Sundays. The restaurant is unprepossessing on the outside, and nice but not extraordinary on the inside, but the fish was wonderful, some of the best I ever had. We had an assortment of sushi, sashimi, raw fish and other things (like the Ceviche which was a special tonight) and every single flavor was bright, ethereal, and utterly delicious. The service was attentive and our waitress had a sense of humor (always a plus in my book). If you are a true lover of fine raw fish, you will be glad if you pay Sushi Ko a visit.
