We had come for the oysters and ordered one Irish Point, one Fanny Bay, and two Malpeque, the latter being the featured oyster of the day at $1.50 each. Although I don't typically eat oysters, I found them quite good. My wife enjoyed the Irish Point and Fanny Bay as well. Since we liked the Malpeque so much, we ordered seven more. - Oysters: 5/5 - Lamb Shank: 4/5 – My wife found it tender and tasty. - Lamb Burger: 2/5 – Our daughter thought the patty was small and dry. - Lobster Pasta: 4/5 – Our son enjoyed the meaty, sweet lobster tail and tender pasta. I opted for three appetizers as my meal: - Onion Rings: 3/5 – Quite basic. - Korean Spicy Chicken Wings: 4/5 – They had a nice kick, though the wings weren't very meaty. - Seafood Chowder: 4/5 – It was packed with ingredients, and while the broth was flavorful, it could have been thicker. The service during the ordering and throughout our meals was excellent, earning a 5/5 rating. However, it took a bit longer to get our bill and have our leftovers packed, so that received a 3/5 rating. The decor had a lovely old-world feel. While we might not return for dinner, we would consider coming back for the oysters, some appetizers, and drinks.
I'm skeptical about the freshness of their seafood, especially since Calgary is so far from the ocean. The oysters had a strong fishy taste at first, but after adding a lot of hot sauce and wine, we managed to get used to them. As for the mussels... the smell was overwhelming! We couldn't handle it and had to send them back. However, the duck leg we ordered was quite good! The service was decent, but the ambiance could definitely use some improvement.
Embarcadero is located inside a converted home, so the decor is a little dated and dark..... but that can easily be interpreted as classic and homey in the right lighting. We started with a round of oysters, picking and choosing what we wanted to try from their oyster menu. Each oyster on the menu has a helpful description of what to expect, but if you get stuck the server will gladly help you navigate and answer any questions. We followed it with the beef carpaccio and the jambalaya. Both were excellent, but the jambalaya stood out for me because the seafood was so fresh. The shrimps were large, the mussels were so sweet and they were generous with the ingredients. Technically we had two appetizers and one main, but we left feeling full and satisfied.
Anniversary dinner with hubby on a Saturday night. We made reservations and was seated upstairs by a window with a view of the Calgary Tower. They have a casual bar downstairs with high stools too. Our waitress was lively and helpful but service was a bit slow as she ran from the kitchen on the 1st floor and back up to our dining area. Not her fault it definitely be warned if you're in a rush to get somewhere. We began with raw oysters and they were very fresh. The mignonette was fantastic! Not the usual horseradish or red sauces. Hubby had bacon wrapped scallops and really enjoyed it. I had a seafood gnocchi and hubby had the 8oz house burger. My gnocchi was huge! I ate all the seafood and about 12 pieces of gnocchi and was stuffed. I brought the rest home. Seafood is delicate to cook such that the scallops and shrimp were a bit over done but that did not detract from the taste. Due to my dairy issue, I had mine in a spicy tomato sauce vs the original cream based sauce. I loved my fish! Hubby was not able to finish his burger so I had the last bit of his patty which was heavily onion flavoured. I liked it but if you a meat purist- heads up! The portions are huge here. You won't leave hungry!!! Our finale was nothing more than espresso. We could not eat or drink any more. We will be back to try other items for sure! Do note we were a late arrival due to parking. They have no designated spots and it's either on the street or in a park plus lot. Lastly, this is an old house covered by trees so it's easy to miss driving by.
Date night ended up being one of the worst for open table experience. Booked via calling, realized they were on open table, called in to cancel and rebook on app, reso got cancelled by restaurant. Booked again the next day, showed up and spend well over $100 on dinner, although server had an attitude problem, dishes arrived timely. Seafood dish was decent, oysters were under expectation. After arriving home, got another email indicating restaurant had cancelled reso, AGAIN... The barely above par food paired with extremely bad service...will not be returning.
