Chateau De Salettes - Cahuzac-sur-Vère

So very, very disappointing. We booked months in advance for a 25th wedding anniversary party. Booking was easy, staff were responsive, no problems accomodating some dietary issues. Menu and wine all arranged in advance; deposit requested and credit card provided in advance. The location and building are special. The dining room itself is ho hum and VERY LOUD (no soft furnishings or acoustic panels). The reception was unfriendly and AT NO TIME DID ANYONE WISH US HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. No little special touches of any kind. A large group with 6 small children were seated right beside us and took out their toys and began to run and shout. I politely asked if we could be moved elsewhere; no sympathy, in fact a very sour response and I was told, you didn 't book a private room . No and I m not asking for one but we didn 't expect to dine in a daycare either. They did not seem to care at all that it was a once in a lifetime event for us or that our large group of 15 Canadians had traveled very far to have a special evening with us. Later in the evening the group with the kids was moved elsewhere but no apology or comment to me. The food was excellent but very little explanation of the food or the wine was provided. When I was presented with the bill, the deposit was not applied and the cost was significantly higher than what was agreed. Subsequently I realized they had never charged the deposit even though I agreed and gave them my card. There were extra charges for water (water!! on a dinner costing thousands of dollars) and extra bottles of wine that the maitre d ' said your guests ordered (very odd to accept orders from other people and not check with the person who is paying for the meal). I don 't think they set out to cheat us, but they certainly were not good at communicating and nor were they kind or welcoming. I wrote them a detailed message outlining exactly these concerns and gave them more than a month to respond to me and nothing. So I feel quite justified in providing an accurate review here. The area around Gaillac is beautiful and there are other places that have great settings and food where the people are also kind and understand hospitality go there (I can personally recommend Table du Sommelier, Au Fils du Saison or La Verrerie in Gaillac; or more casual La Terrase in Penne)

I have been to the Chateau Salettes 10 years ago and it has changed drastically. Bathrooms messy, server with an attitude. We wanted to order another portion of fois gras and were told it was too much trouble for the chef. The Fois gras at 33 Euros was the size of a tablespoon. Very disappointing.

We had chosen this restaurant because it has some very good reviews and a great setting, moreover, we wanted to have a gastronomic experience in this region that we did not know. The setting is quite nice, a beautiful terrace near the vineyards. We were also well received and the service was both friendly and professional with a waiter and waitress who speak perfect english. The real problem with this restaurant is the food. Because we are not big eaters (and because starters seemed more interesting), we chose two starters each but unfortunately we liked none of those: the presentation is great with neat plates but the cuisine is far from worthy of a gastronomic restaurant. The amuse-bouches were bland, the bread dry, the parmesan tiles tasted like plastic and the millefeuille was dull with a black garlic condiment that didn't go well with it. The carpaccio itself (a very pleasant smokey taste) was good but didn't go well with the condiments that came with it. Sometimes, it's better to keep things simple. It is rare that I am so unpleasantly surprised by a gourmet restaurant. There, objectively, there were things that were not mastered, it's not just a matter of taste. I do not understand because the restaurant was really far from being full …. For the dessert, the cheese platter and the selection was very good.

A hotel with spacious rooms and a beautiful view of the nature surrounding the Château de Salettes. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and a swimming pool. Quiet and relaxing stay.

Excellent time, impeccable service, perfect restaurant. Massage to make for a stopover out of time ..
