As a vegetarian, finding good food in Newfoundland can be challenging. However, the veggie options at the Heritage Cafe made me feel included in the Newfoundland experience rather than left out.
This hidden gem is filled with nostalgic photos. The staff here is extremely friendly. After eating out for five weeks, I was craving a homemade meal. When I saw the Macaroni and cheese on the menu, it felt like a taste of home. It was fantastic, just like something we would bake ourselves. Thank you for the cozy atmosphere and delicious food.
We arrived at 5:15 PM and were able to quickly secure a table for five, as reservations are not accepted. This allowed us plenty of time to enjoy our meal before heading just a short walk away to the Ole Colony Trust Building for some local entertainment and dancing. The restaurant is located in a city with breathtaking views and offers a unique dining experience. They are open most days from 12:00 to 19:00. For inquiries, call 709-894-5678.
It is more than a coffee shop and much bigger than the storefront leads you to believe. The Heritage Cafe has a bright, medium living room with a great view of the untouched Collins Cove. A seasonal plus is the outdoor deck. The seafood served for dinner swims before lunch. They will be pleasantly surprised by the prices. You have to try the Cod Tongue Sampler. Warm homemade rolls and homemade jams from local berries and fruit are available. The staff were entertaining and the service was excellent with this great newfoundland kindness and humor. It was more than dinner.
As much as I enjoy their various dishes I am very impressed with 'the walk down memory lane' provided by the many old photos you find decorating the tables and the walls.. One does not have to be a local to appreciate the change these pictures reveal. The staff were very efficient with their service. We had an assortment of dishes, and while fresh caught Cod (once referred as 'the Currency of Newfoundland ' and stated as so on a Newfoundland stamp) is not to be missed it is not a big deal for me, so I had the hot turkey.. gravy and dressing included.. with lovely home fries..not the soggy oily type. Wine selection is understandably limited. We arrived at 17:15 and were able to catch a table for 5...they do not take reservations.. which gave us sufficient time for our meal then a 3 minute walk down to the Ole Colony Trust Building for the Wednesday Night local entertainment AND some dancing. A lovely Restaurant in a town with a million views and a Special Difference. Open most days12:00 to 19:00. Local # 709-894-5678
