It started pouring when we were heading back, so we were all pretty cold and soaked by the time we got to this cafe. The staff here are super welcoming and friendly and had a table set up for all 20 of us in no time with a steady supply of hot coffee for everyone. My boyfriend's family turned out to be related to one of the kitchen staff, which was kinda funny. The food is just a selection of tasty, home-cooked food (not healthy, but tasty). I had the cod au gratin and it was great. It's a nice, cozy little restaurant and I would recommend it if you're visiting the area.
The Heritage CafeThe Cafe is located in what used to be the 'downtown' area of Burin. It's very much a 'heritage' cafe in that the menu is a great representation of local Newfoundland Dishes ; Molasses Baked Bean, Toutons, Fish Cakes, Pan Fried Cod, Turkey or Roast Beef with the necessary Dressing & Gravy, Cod Au Gratin, Fish n Brewis, and a variety of Soups, Stews and Chili. However there is another side to the name of this Cafe, in that herein you will see portions of the early history of Burin. The walls and especially so the Tables contain fantastic black and white photos of Burin as it was back in the early years, primarily the 1940's to mid 1950's. This was when the economy of the Burin Peninsula was based on the Ocean, and Burin was the economic Hub of the Peninsula. We went for the Food but I found the main course and desert was for me very much the history in pictures as much as my tasty Roast Beef. The view towards Collins Cove and Ship Cove adds to the ambience of the location. Enjoy a cold one during the summer on the deck overlooking the 'inner harbour' where Holletts & Sons had their wharf and sheds.
Came to NFLD in search of pan fried cod. This place has it all. Atmosphere, service AND incredible food!!! So glad we found this place!!
We arrived 5 minutes before closing on a Friday evening and were never-the-less graciously welcomed. The pan fried cod was delicious. The homemade pickles were fabulous. Deserts are special and house made. The view from nearly every table is fabulous and it's worthwhile to take the time to walk outside as the ocean view is gorgeous. The restaurant is filled with historic photographs including the tsunami that struck Burin in 1929. Not to be missed.
My boyfriend and I stopped here for supper while driving the heritage loop. We ordered fish cakes, beans and bologna, and toutens. The food was tasty and represented traditional Newfoundland food very well. This quaint cafe provided us with a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. We would highly recommended.
