Whether it's a quick stop over before the footy or an after work dinner, Karaage hits the spot! Plenty of options to choose from whether it's a hot meal or quick bite of sushi. I've been here a few times now (first time with the fabulous Cino's Mum and the other half) and ordered the same thing each time! Our recent trip, I ordered the Karaage Chicken and it was so yummy! Crispy chicken, fluffy rice, Japanese mayo - who can really complain? My chicken was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and the rice perfectly cooked. The prices are really good, portions are great, staff very friendly and so easy to find! Definitely a go to for me when I want something quick, simple and delicious!
So on a Friday afternoon after work you think "what do you want for dinner?" Pizza or Karaage chicken...Karaage chicken wins. Now im not and havent been a fan of Teriyaki chicken for a while due to a bad experience, but for the past couple of visits to Karaage my mind has been changed and these guys do a really good Teriyaki chicken. Shortly after 5pm on a Friday I thought this place would be a bit busier but it worked in my favour because it wasnt busy. The chicken wasnt dry and just tasted wonderful, with the perfect amount of Teriyaki sauce that ment you could get the taste of the chicken also, the lettuce was freshly washed and crispy with steaming rice at the bottom. Great choice for dinner.
Karaage is a Japanese cooking technique, whereby small pieces of meat - usually bite size pieces of chicken thigh - are marinated, coated in potato starch (or wheat flour) and lightly fried in oil. With a name like Karaage, I was expecting to find great Chicken Karaage on offer. After reviewing the menu - this didn't take long as there are only ten items - I asked the seemingly absurd question, "do you sell Chicken Karaage?" The staff pointed to menu item number six, which represented a fried chicken thigh, topped with mayonnaise and BBQ sauce, served over rice with mixed greens. This doesn't look like any Chicken Karaage I've ever had, in Japan, Australia or elsewhere, but I still decided to give it a go. A bit too much mayonnaise and BBQ sauce for my taste, but the chicken was tasty. This rated a 3. Service was less than stellar...not exactly friendly. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
Tumbleweeds & crickets greeted me & my Zo-mates on arrival, along with a slightly uninspiring vibe inside. Undeterred we nevertheless still ordered our fix of karaage chicken. A large bowl for $9.50 was served with salad leaves, a substantial bed of rice and a veritable river of sauce on top. The karaage pieces had a nice crisp coating & the chicken was tender. Size-wise it definitely represented good value for money & luckily I had a willing taker to finish the last of mine for me. Overall this was a totally adequate low-key meal. There was also a selection of pre-made single sushi rolls and packs which looked a bit sad after what I suspect was a long day in the cabinet. Undoubtedly a decent feed for residents in the Student One building above but otherwise....yeah, nup. I could take it or leave it.
