Goldener Stern - Berlin

I was back in Berlin to visit many of my friends there. Today I was meeting an American who has lived for many years in Berlin. She picked out this restaurant and it was a winner. In fact I was a house guest of another American friend who lives nearby and she said she and her husband often visit this restaurant. Don't get me wrong--this is definitely not a place that caters to American tastes! It has wonderful German style food! I enjoyed the Goulasch on the daily menu. If I hadn't had duck the previous day, I would have tried that. My food was wonderful. The service was wonderful. The company was wonderful. The prices were very reasonable. I have to say that for a Monday noontime in December I was surprised that the place was pretty full for the time we were there. But considering the food and the prices, I shouldn't be. Very convenient to the U-Bahn since it's right on Bayerisher Platz.

The website for this place makes it look a little bit classy, but its quite tatty- floors are quite dirty carpet and they are littered with various detritus; there are few staff and although the service is fine to begin with, once a few more guests come through the door, the standards plummet from the German usual. The staff are fairly disinterested and wear their everyday clothes- this is unusual in a 'typical' German restaurant, in which staff are usually better presented; poor selection of beer; it's a little journey out of the tourist-infested Berlin to visit here but once you have, you realise you need not have bothered. The food is ok- but that is it. A lot of Berlin seems a lower standard than the rest of Germany and we left this place disappointed after a long journey to reach it. In summary, a bit dirty, understaffed, scruffy disinterested staff, crummy beer....there is a LOT more choice....just hope the local English school doesn't crash in to turn the place upside-down!

On the suggestion of a local with whom we one a mixed group of Grmans and Amerians dine at this local Berlin spot to the great satisfaction of all. th asparagus where in season an plentiful; the schnitzl was excellent, the grilled chicken was superb. And the place was not touristy. If you can have a meal here you will not be disappointed...note: There are a limited number of English menus, and special dishes are not included in it.

We had been there on 09.03.2017 at night, for me it was the second time. I was really excited about the first time, but yesterday I was totally disappointed. the obazda was served with gray brot from the bag, the calves were very small and extremely fat, the carrots from the potato cucumber salad were more potato bread. the service unfriendly and very rarely visible at the table. the good impression was therefore completely revised by the first visit.
