I really wanted this restaurant to be excellent. The idea of a raw bar in el jebel got my juices flowing. But after eating there 4 times, I can say it is very average and overpriced. The good news, the oysters are excellent and fresh. A reasonable $2.50 a piece. The rest is so so, and expensive. A so so restaurant in this neck of the woods will not survive. A shrimp calamari mixto is the type that comes in a 10 pound bag from Sysco, and each order is thrown from bag to fryer as needed. Price $17. The crab tempura is the same. Thick breaded, and I'm not even sure the crab is real. In any event, it also fell off the Sysco truck in a frozen bag. Price $18. Scallops are not very well seared. Thats because they dont buy them dry packed, so they contain so much water that no one can get a good sear on them. Price $37. A glass of Duckhorn Decoy chardonnay is $11/glass, for a bottle that I routinely buy for $16. They know how to charge, now that have to learn to cook, and not short cut everything. Mediocrity in El Jebel Basalt is doomed to fail. There is just too many really good restaurants around.Addenda: One Year Later I love to eat my words. We have tried this restaurant now many times. The service at the tables, and at the bar have improved immensely. The oysters have always been great. But I think the seafood courses have gotten much better as well. I am so happy to see this restaurant do well, and I will continue to do my share.
Wasn't impressed. Food lacked seasoning. Lemonade was made too tart. One employee was being over worked. Our waitress was the hostess, bartender, and server. The restaurant was full and she was waiting on everyone running around crazy. Didn't like that i received my protein 10 mins before my sides were ready.
I’m not a fan of this place for several reasons. First and foremost the restaurant was freezing in the middle of December. No heat!!! Almost everyone had a jacket on while eating and nothing was noticed or done to change the comfort level. Secondly they are one of the RFV restaurants that is in desperate need of help. 15 mins for 2 glasses of wine and a Diet Coke. The fish we ordered was over cooked and apparently the chef will only prepare to their preference, yet the waiter asks how we like the fish done? The risotto was awful, tasted like vomit to be frank. The oysters (west coast) that we had weren’t tasty at all. Waiter was nice but pushed to her limit. Most of the tables began to fill up and I noticed the bartender had to pitch in and all staff seemed anxious and semi panicked. There were 3 people working and all tables had been picked up and sat…… it’s not a huge place but you could tell it is hard to work there.This place is just a mess. The owner and management needs to make some major changes. We not be back here, sorry but we had way to many negative aspects come into play during our experience to try again.
I had a fantastic dinner experience at Ocean. Our friends were in town for the weekend, and everyone in our group enjoyed the wines, appetizers, entrees, and desserts. The food was excellent, and the service was superb. The kitchen really impressed us! I highly recommend this restaurant.
