However, the wedge salad was really good. The waitress was beautiful, but inexperienced. I preferred this place because they had a better selection of sandwiches and appetizers, rather than expensive $28 dinners.
This restaurant has a diverse history. It appears to be a traditional diner from the outside, but it was once known as one of the top French restaurants in the capital district. Over time, it has undergone several changes, and now it is trying to appeal to a wider audience. My wife and I went there with some friends for dinner recently. We initially sat in the front room, but had to move to a back room because the sun was shining directly on our table through the window. Although the table in the back room was more comfortable, we found the food to be only mediocre. We all agreed that this place would not be one of our go-to spots for dinner.
This restaurant showed me the true potential of balsamic drizzle and how it can differ from just being a dressing. Don't judge a book by its cover - this place is not your typical small, dark restaurant!
1940's diner vibe with a full bar. here they eat in mad men
I came here for the Saratoga Restaurant Week menu. The location is in Malta. The exterior looks like an old diner, but once inside and seated, I felt very relaxed and comfortable. My server was very pleasant and relaxed, which helped make my meal quite enjoyable. This was a very early dinner, so very few people were here at any given time. The service was very prompt and efficient. I started out with the antipasto skewers, with salami, mozzarella and tomatoes. I really don't like antipasto salads because of the vinegar, and also because I don't like olives or raw tomatoes. But I ate the green parts of the salad, the meat and the cheese. This was the low part of the meal for me, but I could appreciate that it was a good appetizer. The Sole Français was exquisite, with a nice glazy-creamy, lemony sauce, perfectly-cooked green beans and delicious mashed potatoes. I enjoyed the good mix of music being softly piped in...a blend of 70s pop-rock to country, and lots in-between (the good stuff). Dessert was Tuxedo Cake, in this case, a 3-layer, yellow, all-purpose flour cake. One layer was filled with a chocolate cream, another with a white cream, and it was covered with a darker icing of chocolate. Very nice...somewhat dense but not sickeningly sweet like a lot of cakes can be. The coffee was delicious...and that's rare up in these parts. If I lived up in this neck of the woods, I'd be here every week. The more extensive menu offers even more of their interesting dishes. At just $30, this was one of the least expensive of the Saratoga region's Restaurant Week menus. Before I left, I learned that this place is closely connected with Lake Ridge Restaurant down in Round Lake, which happened to be my next stop and is one of my 5 favorite restaurants in the Capital-Saratoga region.
