My wife and I did it again this December and although they couldn't get us the sleigh runners from Grunerbaum and had to use the wheels instead of the snow depth, it was still a nice experience. The sleigh ride takes about an hour and leads you deep into the valley where you stop in the Prossau Alpine House and stay an hour to enjoy a good meal. They have a wide selection of German and Austrian dishes, but the cooked trout from the brook, which runs directly on site, is great. They also make their own land hunters and Elk sausage, which is worth buying as well as very good liquors. The interior of the restaurant is classic old European and the owner is very friendly. Really a wonderful experience. Dress warm, very warm. They cover you with three different ceilings for carriage ride, but it can be cold so dress accordingly. You can make reservations with the reception at Hotel Bismarck in Bad Hof Gastein.
Love the place, beautiful landscape, took a horse slide to this restaurant. Menu small, but very traditional, very tasty, super service a real winner.
A good walk from Bad Gastein and a pleasant place for lunch or refreshments. There is a gravel track all the way, but once at the Alpenhaus you have a narrow one. steep path if you want to go further.
When reaching the Alpenhaus on a sunny and hot day carrying kids, you are happy to enjoy simple Austrian mountain food and a fresh beer and relax in a quiet and friendly environment before going back... down. I cannot say there is anything really special (service is ok but not great) but we managed to get there 2 times over 10 days... so the location and the comfort of a good break rather than the rest make the experience worth being repeated.
I love the long walk through the Kotschachtal, east of Bad Gastein; usually through snow and always through silence ... apart, sometimes from the bells on the horse-drawn carriages which carry the rich people who can't walk very far. And at the end where, in winter, it's hard to walk further, is the Alpenhaus Prossau, warm, comfortable with good food and everything you could wish to drink. An attentive host and good things from the kitchen and it's a place where you can relax down and rest.
