What a wonderful place! Fast, friendly service, unbelievable prices, and good food to boot! The decor is wonderfully quirky, too. I will be a regular, I feel sure.
More often than not, when you see a Double (Whatever) Burger on a restaurants menu, it means that the patties they use are of the thin, pre-fab variety, which is why they offer the option to double up. I was pretty firmly rooted in that mindset when I ordered Mama 's double bacon cheeseburger and fries. The place is a lot to take in, visually. The decor consists almost entirely of Minny Mickey Mouse stuffed animals, balanced out with old license plates and drive-in movie theater speakers. Seating consists of a wildly varying collection of tables and booths that match only in the sense that they add to the landslide of kitsch. So I think I can apply the term 'quirky ' to Mama 's without sounding like someone shopping at Screen Door. It is quite the sight to behold, but then again, so was the burger that came to be sitting in front of me. The stereotype I had applied to the whole double burger thing certainly had no place here. I was sitting face to face with what looked to be two 1/2 pound patties dripping with ketchup and cheese, making an obvious mockery of the modest buns which held them. I studied it for a few moments as my wife chuckled under her breath; she, who had the good sense to order the regular cheeseburger. I finally tackled the thing but it shrugged me off like a shoe fly. I eventually realized it would be easier to just rotate bites between the lower and upper patties. The meat itself was honest to goodness, hand pressed chuck, cooked to medium well. It reminded my wife of the legendary bar burgers she used to get in Detroit when she was growing up. The crinkle cut fries allowed me to hide the fact that I needed a break between bites from the behemoth laying before me, and to that end, I thank them. It took a while but I finally slayed the beast, and most definitely learned my lesson. I 'm sure if I had spoken to Mama herself she wouldve said she told me so. Grade: B+ (prices are geared toward the blue collar crowd that seems to make up the majority of the clientele)
