The amount of salt in the batter made it inedible. We asked for a manager, but both were gone for the day. Someone in the kitchen took a bite and decided to throw out all the batter and start again. I was disappointed that we weren't offered another menu item. The mashed potatoes, beans, chocolate cake, and coffee were excellent. Our waiter was courteous, but spoke so quietly that we were embarrassed by the number of times we asked him to repeat himself. I'd also suggest he stop chewing gum while working. We love the history of Arrow Rock and Hustons. We still recommend both!
Definitely book a reservation in advanced!! Particularly if you are going on the nights of a show at the Lyceum- I think it can fill up fast. The Mac and Chicken was pretty good- pasta was ok and the chicken well seasoned. It is a beautifully maintained historic building with an interesting display harkening back to the days when the house was an old mercantile. Waitresses were friendly.
We made reservations for dinner after the Lyceum matinee on August 26th, 2023. We have done this many times and always enjoyed their pork tenderloins. They were fabulous. This time, however, we were shocked. The portions were tiny, and tasteless. Very poor quality food. We learned the ownership had changed, and everything was different. It certainly was. We canceled our next reservation, and won't be returning. How sad. This place was an institution.
We were promptly seated and ordered. Then sat and sat. We saw 4 tables of people come in, order and get food. When the 8-person table next to us (who came in more than 30 minutes after us) received their food, we asked about our order. Our waitress apologized but didn’t know what happened. The next time she came out we asked again, she still did not know. At this point we had been waiting for our food for over an hour. We never got our food. We were not offered a comped glass of tea or lemonade so we paid and left, 75 minutes after arriving, never got food.
Apparently they are closed. We went on a Thursday for lunch during their posted business hours, leaving before they opened for the two hour drive and arriving at 12:30 only to be welcomed by a closed sign and locked doors. In the short time we were there, several other cars pulled up and wandered around with the same puzzled look. Like us, they had checked the website and Facebook page and believed the posted hours.
