Our niece and her husband had been visiting us in Switzerland and Italy for three weeks; we traveled a bit and ate in several places, most of them quite good. However, they commented that the meal at the Hotel Alvetern was probably the best they had the entire trip. My wife and I could not dispute that claim. The food was wonderful. We went with the time-honored cordon bleu and hirschpfeffer dishes as well as vegetarian plates. Everything was done perfectly. The service was friendly, efficient, and attentive. The setting was pleasant. When in this part of the Engadine again, we will definitely eat here.
The regional meal (Capuns) was quite good and authentic, although the portion could have been bigger. The Cordon Bleu was also fine, good quality meat. Great French Fries. Prices are OK for Switzerland. Service... they tried, but somehow don't make the impression that they like what they're doing. You could literally feel how stressed out they were. As a result, the athmosphere was not relaxing. Although we can't complain about a specific thing. If I am hungry and in the neighborhood, I would probably go again, but not drive there from far away.
Having dinner in the restaurant is a journey through the region and reasonable priced. The wine is well choosen and it is simply the best restaurant in town with a nice mountain view during daylight.
Gärstensuppe (Barleysoup) was this out of a can? I think so..... The mixed salad was good but the dressing could have been thicker and not so ready made. And the water pitcher was dirty..... Well were we just unlucky or???
Recommend reserving in advance, as popular by the locals and now know why! (always a good sign) The food was fabulous and much to choose from. The 3 course set menu offered great options at reasonable prices 29 49 CHF (vegetarian choices too) Friendly staff which made our last night stay in Ardez memorable.
