It is a Lonely Planet favourite, full of locals who don’t ask for Wi-Fi and beer. Some tourists find their way to Golden Mango. Afterwards we found out that Golden Mango showed us an incomplete menu with pages missing. They have much more on offer. In March 2024, we ordered egg and cheese kothu (Rs.1200), a well-known dish in Sri Lanka. Round flat bread, made of stoneground whole wheat flour, it chopped and mixed with curry of beef, mutton, seafood, chicken or pork, topped with scrambled eggs, cheese, onions, carrots and/or chillies. The egg and cheese gave the roti a creamy flavour. The kothu dish was well prepared, but the flavour did not impress us. It will not become our favourite Sri Lankan dish. We finish our dinner with coffee and a piece of Black Forest pastry from the patisserie (220). The pastry chef excelled: very good pastry. The service was good. Golden Mango offers good Sri Lankan food, but they are surpassed by their pastries. Recommended.
Wish we had not ventured inside. Scruffy and dull. Tables sticky . The waiters rather abrupt and surly. The papya juice was warm and thick. The curry was glutinous and odd tasting.
The curry’s lacked flavour and were so disappointing. The garlic naan was nice but you could barely taste the garlic. I would not return.
We were staying at Kubura (separate review) on a half board basis but fancied eating out. This place was one of the closest to us so we thought we'd give it a go. It was a good call. Staff were efficient but perhaps not as friendly as other places we ate at. We ordered half a tandoori chicken, paneer Makhani, chapati, lemon soda (served with sugar syrup) and a mango lassi The food was really really good. The tandoori chicken was cooked to perfection with amazing flavours, it also packed a nice kick of heat. The paneer dish was great. Again packed with flavours. The mango lassi was really good, not the best I've had but certainly in the top 10. The quality was great and the value was exceptional. £15 (21/01/24) Highly recommended, yes it is a little out of town but very much worth your time getting there
Good food and potion size was good. The place was swarming with people, I think it’s usually a busy place have plenty of customers so they don’t really care about or give attention as they know business is there anyways. We had to go and pick up our own menu and walk back to the table, food arrived within the 15-20 minutes time frame. We requested for chilie paste as it was not given with the fried rice but never got it. The waiter passed us twice but never bothered to bring it to us… Bills however arrive super fast An ok place nothing special, Food is good but service is not.
