We went here for lunch today, having heard a reservation is wise in the evening. When we arrived at around noon there were few patrons, but it soon became busy with a steady stream of customers, mainly local, with some tourists. The menu is traditional fare, including seafood and alcatra. We ordered the swordfish and octopus stew. Both were good; the swordfish was tender and moist, and accompanied by salad and boiled potato, while the octopus (which I haven’t tried before) was tender with a delicious sauce. Each was a large plateful of food, and the potato was certainly surplus to requirements. I was only able to eat half of the octopus. Maybe we are not big eaters, but beware of over-ordering. The service was brisk and efficient, for most of the time handled by a single server, though a second server arrived later. The feeling it left was more efficient than friendly.
Affordable bottles of local wine and a friendly atmosphere, the restaurant varied between busy and quiet. Had to have the famous Alcatra traditional beef stew dish and even though the menu said the smallest serving was for 2, they were gracious enough to do a serving for one at half the price 10 euros. The serving for one was probably enough for 3 LOL. Helpful to refer to reviews when ordering as I asked for fish and chips and was told they didn 't serve it, I showed them a picture of a review at their restaurant and they went ahh and went to get it. The menu was simple and not clear on which dish was fried fish I was told by the server only grilled they didn 't have it. Actually they did. Both meals huge portions even though we requested smaller, it is am amazingly good value. I am pretty sure you could serve a small village on the full service of Alcatra. We didn 't bother with reservations as we passed the restaurant the night before and there were empty tables. Did I mention street parking right outside free after 6pm? All around good time.
We came here recommended by our hotel. Nice local food, and good quality/price. I tried the fish and it was fresh and tasty.
The best Bacalhau in the Azores! So delicious with olive oil and garlic. Patricia is the chef and waits on you. She is charming.
