So when I invited some friends for Sunday lunch and they chose The Bear in Wantage, I was prepared for a shock - and we got several! All of them good, though. When we arrived in the charming old town area of Wantage, we found that the main car park was free on Sundays, which was a pleasant surprise. A short walk through a passage/shopping mall led us right outside The Bear. The reception and staff were very pleasant and helpful, escorting us to our table in the large dining area, which was divided into smaller sections with nice big tables and chairs. The decor echoed the hotel's history, and we were not rushed to order, as the restaurant was busy. The food arrived on lovely hot plates and was plentiful, tasty, and well presented. There were two sizes of lunch offered - the larger one being a satisfying meal, and the smaller one suitable for those with a modest appetite. The large roasts (beef, lamb, chicken, and pork) were accompanied by boats of gravy and a selection of vegetables, priced at around £16 per person and offering good value for money. The service was excellent, provided by busy yet attentive staff. The generously portioned desserts rounded off a very pleasant dining experience. It is worth the drive to dine at The Bear, and I will definitely be returning.
My family and I recently stayed at this hotel and we found it to be very comfortable and inviting. The rooms were clean with comfortable beds and good water pressure in the showers. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.
The Sunday lunch at this restaurant was excellent. However, I was disappointed when I inquired about a vegetarian roast dinner and was informed that I could have a roast dinner without the meat, but there was nothing to replace it. That being said, the pork roast and salmon were both excellent. I have never been disappointed with the food here before, but today I was disappointed with the limited choice available.
Been back here a few years running now. Reasonably priced hotel, good location in Wantage for shops and pubs. Nice friendly staff, especially the receptionist and hotel porter who helped us move rooms. Maybe in need of some room refurbs to keep it fresh.
Can’t go wrong here for the money. Nice room, quiet, the bed was really comfy and you can feel the history of the place. We stayed with family members and had about 10 rooms. Great location with easy reach to cheap/free parking.
