Service really slow, waited over an hour for my food, after a long wait wasn't that nice anyway. Definitely won't be returning.
This is the only sit down Chinese restaurant in Oakengates although they also do takeaways. This was our second visit following an excellent meal two weeks prior. We had a starter which was like a full course in itself, and asked if we could share a main course. This was no problem. On the first visit had duck with plum sauce and on this visit had Cantonese beef. On each occasion the food was very tasty and beautifully cooked, perhaps though the duck was a little salty. Restaurant is spotless as were the toilets. We found the price of the meals and drinks very reasonable. Also on this occasion there were no female waitresses, as were on the first visit. The female waitresses were dressed in full Chinese costumes which added to the occasion so a shame was not the case on the second visit. I have to say that they were far more attentive than the male waiters. Also if you have any food left, they are more than happy to let you take it away with you and we left with chips nicely parcelled up in a heat save container! We will definately be visiting again
I was excited when this place opened as we lack a sit down Chinese restaurant locally in a high street that at one point hosted four sit down Indian restaurants! I walk past regularly on the way back from the train station and regrettably it often seems very quiet, with at best one table occupied which is a shame as when we got round to visiting we thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was fresh, hot and tasty and generous portions at a reasonable price. This was the early days of the restaurant and I think a lack of experience did show in the service despite it being incredibly quiet (we were the only table in there on a Friday night) there were 2 waitresses AND a supervisor constantly milling around and we did become conscious in the end that they were always watching they also seemed unfamiliar with the menu, often having to check what exactly they were offering. Despite that though they were pleasant and friendly enough and it didn't detract from a lovely meal. Months down the line it rarely seems any busier despite various pricing initiatives but hopefully they can persevere and make it a success because it's a good addition to Oakengates solid portfolio.
I went here with my partner and our friends for a joint birthday bash at Chinese New Year; we 'd booked a table thinking it was going to be busy, but were a little concerned to arrive at 7.30 pm to find only one other couple in there. And only one other couple turned up whilst we were there 8 customers in total! Perhaps a Monday night in Oakengates was a much greater influence than the fact it was Chinese New Year, because the great food at a really keen price should have seen this place full. Having looked at the menu, we all selected the 'As much as you can eat ' buffet at only £11.95 each. Between the 4 of us, we selected 8 different starters and each portion came with enough for each of us to try, including the crispy duck. Everything was well cooked, tasty and clearly not just smothered with MSG. All you can eat? OK, lets have another round of starters different ones, but again all really tasty. After this, we moved onto the mains. I had ribs and they were great meaty and tasty once more. Stir fried veg was crisp and dry whilst the noodles was just right. We also had a selection of beers and a couple of bottles of wine it was joint birthdays. Total price was around £22 each and we were all full. The Golden Star hasn 't been opened long, but should be doing really well on our experience. If anyone fancies a sit down Chinese in the Oakengates area, perhaps before or after a trip to @The Place or a pub crawl, then I 'd heartily recommend that you try here.
