Contribuiți la feedbackToday we woke up early and went to visit the mangrove around Monterrico, through the Chiquimulilla canal and the tributary streams around the canal. Along these rivers, we saw the famous shrimp farming, which is a negative example of deforestation as the mangrove is cut down to create pools for exporting shrimp to Europe. The shrimp farms are heavily guarded, and it is important to follow any signs indicating private property to avoid potential conflicts. In addition to shrimp farming, we were also interested in the diverse fauna and flora of the area. The mangrove is a protected habitat with not many buildings, and some local residents live between the canal and the ocean or on the land separated by the mangrove. Exploring the area with a guide can introduce you to a variety of birds, reptiles, and fish found in the mangrove. Some areas also offer opportunities for swimming in fresh water. It is required that anyone building a house or business in the mangrove area, such as a hotel, must plant a certain number of trees elsewhere to compensate for the trees cut down. Unfortunately, not many follow this regulation.
The mangroves surrounding the small town of Monterrico on the peaceful Guatemalan coast are a natural treasure. Their recent designation as a natural park has sparked increased interest in conservation among local residents. These mangroves are not only important for fish species, but also attract tourists to the area. Additionally, one of the beaches on this coast is a nesting ground for sea turtles and has a conservation and reproduction center for these turtles, making it a must-visit spot. I hope this corner of the world continues to thrive and expand for the benefit of all.
During the year, I had the opportunity to accompany a group of high school students studying agroforestry. It was a wonderful experience. The engineers who guided us shared information about the various flora and fauna in the area, including mangroves. At the end of the trip, we visited species such as turtles. The students were required to submit a detailed report on the excursion.
You love nature this place will love you.
