The evening was an uncanny experience. I've been to Ruth's Chris before. It's almost always busy, loud and tasty. This time it was just delicious. It was Tuesday, March 10. The corona virus was suspected to penetrate the Bay Area. Although still a few weeks after closing, San Francisco approached the recipe, and people already left their lively restaurant scene. When we arrived at RC, there were only four people at the bar and two deuces occupied in the front dining room. The two of us were shown at a stand in the back dining room where we were the only diners for about half an hour when a party of two pairs was shown. I've never seen the dining room to be so calm. It was a pleasure, but it was the right thing for the wrong reason. Dinner was as usual excellent and we could not remember, except for a few very late dinners there when the restaurant had allowed us such a comfortable conversation. It would be wonderful if it were to be like that every time we go there, but not for the terrible reason it was. However, to noisy restaurants are ubiquitous San Fransisco Fluch. The waiting staff was really wonderful, but an unmistakable aura of concern. How long would they have work? Would they be able to provide their families? What could happen to the restaurant and their jobs if the virus visit was an extended one? Uncertain was definitely a damper out our night. We left a very generous tip. There were a few more people at the bar and two more couples in the front dining room when we were gone. But don't sit in the back dining room anymore. Among the many, many restaurants in San Francisco, there are several that count themselves as steak houses. Some are fine, some are good, a mere, handful rise above others. We hope they will all survive, but we have no idea when we can return.
They were often, but today the food wasn't the best all three of our steaks came wrong the bisque came from soup soup three small pieces of lobster. The Calamari was delicious. I let disappointed the quality of the steaks hopefully it was just a fuke
My water had a glob of some filth on the base of the glass. The server replaced it kindly. The replacement glass had a glob of filth on the rim of the glass and my friends water glass has a glob of filth on the side of the glass. I asked a passing employee for help getting the water glasses replaced, and he asked us to wait. That was ok with me. When that employee returned he criticized me for my request for clean glasses and said that it seems like “every time you are here there is an issue or problem”. I was a bit taken aback. I said I don’t want any trouble but I would like to have clean glasses of water. The employee said something else offensive and I stated listen, we have not fined here for years. How would you say that there are issues every time we are here? The employee told me there are notes kept in files on customers at Ruth’s Chris and that he had read the notes they had on me. I said, “Listen, we just want to have a nice dinner and I don’t want to escalate this issue, but I do want clean glasses of water. He excused himself. I went up to the front area and asked to see the manager. After ten minutes the general manager came to talk to me. I relayed the details and complained that it was insulting to be confronted at the table like that. The manager apologized several times. I went for a short walk to get some air. I returned to my guest and we finished our dinner. Later, the employee who had insulted me came to the table and stood over me talking again to me in an offensive manner. It was terrible. I could not even eat the dessert.
Decided to wear my nice wool hat, was told immediately that hats were not allowed in the dining room, ok. I'm ok with that but can you tell why tennis shoes are allowed and not a dress wool hat? What a Circus. Get your rules in order people.
