I’m not sure if this place is related to Ipoh Bean Sprout Chicken in Crystal Mall but it seems vaguely familiar. Although this restaurant is relatively new, the inside seemed a bit dated. Still, it was fairly busy which should be a good sign. We ordered a cold Milo $4) and cold Lemon Tea $1 with the meal) to start our lunch.
Ben and I went to check out the Ipoh Bean Sprout Chicken on Granville St., Vancouver which we spotted a little while ago when we drove along that street. We love the char koey teow from Ipoh Bean Sprout Chicken in Crystal Mall foodcourt. Apparently, the official name of this restaurant is Perak Malaysian Cafe.
New Malaysian restaurant that just opened up in the Marpole area seems to be a popular choice in the community recently. <br/ <br/ Went right before lunch hour at around 11:45 on a weekday and within half an hour the restaurant was quite busy. <br/ <br/ First thing I noticed..it was very muggy in the restaurant. They really need to get some ventilation in there. My party was sweating while eating! <br/ <br/ Service was soso. Don't think they were expecting that many people so they seemed unorganized. The 2 servers on the floor seemed nice but they were just all over the place trying to get things done. Communication between them seemed to be an issue as well. We pretty much got served our food and that was it. No tea refills or check-ins. <br/ <br/ The bright spot.. food was great! Prices include tea/coffee which was nice. Cold drink $1. Dishes had great portions and good flavours. I had the Bean Sprout Chicken with soup noodles. It is like the Haianese chicken but slightly different sauce and served with bean sprouts. The chicken was tender and flavourful. Friends enjoyed the Laksa, Nasi Goreng and Curry Chicken. Will be back to try different dishes! <br/ <br/ Parking can be a pain as Granville St. is always busy. I suggest parking on a side street (67th) and walking down.
Malaysian flare done right.<br/ <br/ The roti canai was steaming hot crispy. Cooked well just the right amount of chewiness. The curry for dipping was spicy salty. Dipped with the roti, it was sweet salty. <br/ <br/ The Penang fried kueh teow had that wok fire flavour. Not too greasy which was a bonus. <br/ <br/ My recommendation- the roti canai!
Perak Malaysian Cafe is on South Granville St by the Safeway location on 70th Ave. This is our first time visiting here. We got here just a few minutes after 11am on Sunday, but it was not yet opened. We did see people inside setting up though so we went for a stroll around the block before coming back.
