South Mountain Cafe - Phoenix

My family and I went out for breakfast yesterday, and the food was fantastic. My mother and brother ordered the American breakfast, sharing some home fries, pepper bacon, and pancakes. The home fries were savory, and the bacon was thick, flavorful, and crispy. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. I ordered the chilaquiles, which were also tasty; I just wished they had a bit more sauce, and some sour cream and queso fresco on top would have taken them to another level. Overall, the meal was delightful, especially the rice and beans, which paired beautifully. I will definitely be back!

The food was incredible, just like the owners! The chef—who was truly more than just a chef—took the time to talk to us after our meal about various menu items. This place is an amazing hidden gem in South Phoenix!

The standout items on the menu included perfectly cooked eggs served alongside crispy bacon, delicious roasted potato wedges, and light, fluffy pancakes (which I only allowed myself to enjoy a few bites of... didn't want to overindulge!). Despite being situated in a neighborhood dominated by chain restaurants, I genuinely encourage you to support this family-run establishment. A memorable moment that captured the spirit of the place was when we arrived: the chef was busy cleaning the front door threshold. He then paused to help Peg navigate a steep curb before heading back to the kitchen. It’s evident that the chefs here wear many hats, and this was no exception. I was here three times in three weeks, they're here for something really good! So happy to have a café like this in South Phoenix. The breakfast items are A, Chilequiles as good as Mamas!

Great food and great service. Jose, the owner, is a great chef and really a great cook. My kids also loved the kids menu options.
