Typical tavern in Menetes, a lovely village near Ammopi. The tavern is found by climbing the stairs behind the other Perdika tavern. It is rustic and characteristic and has tables outside. The food is delicious especially the souvlaki and the french fries. Generous portions. We also had fava beans and cheese croquettes, even good ones. The prices are excellent. All these dishes plus wine and a large bottle of water cost 36 euros. Price per person: €15–20
Perhaps the oldest tavern in Menetes, whose host Manolis, eighty-eight years old still at the service of customers, carries on admirably. It has a double entrance from a back staircase and another from one of the alleys of the village. Real Greek tavern, with historic photos of Manolis hanging on the walls. The cuisine is excellent, try the meatballs and the pork with artichokes. Once in the village, do not stop immediately but go up the stairs and alleys and get there.
Manolis is 88 years old, a life told by the photos hanging on the walls and an incredible energy. He is the oldest innkeeper in Menetes, in Karpathos and perhaps in all of Greece, but he doesn't care. Every evening he welcomes his customers, takes the orders, recommends the typical dishes, serves at the table, does the calculations, brings the bill and gives away the sweet... a marvel. He is proud of his Makarones, defined by many as the best on the island on a par with those of Olympos, he is intolerant of menu changes, you can even ask for them, but he won't listen to you! He is the soul of this tavern and the jewel that distinguishes it from all the others. An old-fashioned Greek taverna, no frills, lots of substance. Go there. You will not regret it.
