Get a upper level room looking over the water corner towards the Cruise Ships and do yourself a favor make friends with Kelis Concierge. Call a month in advance of your stay and get the scoop on outings to Mendenhall Glacier, hiking, and restaurants from the Concierge in the hotel lobby. The staff is super cool and friendly and they just take care of you. This is the hotel that has all the politicians staying there when in session so then it gets really busy and hard to get a good room but so many places in the heart of Juneau is a short walk away. The Tram, Tracy's Crab Shack, Amalga Distillery and many, many shops! Keli will guide you right Trust Me!
My experience at this hotel was subpar to say the least. People need to know that the front desk is booking people in rooms that are infested with bugs. I checked into room 919 after a long day to come into a very hot room. There was a big heater/a/c machine in the room and I thought it was there because it was so cold outside. NOPE. Come to find out, it's there to help kill the bugs in the room. So clearly, if you know there's bugs in the room, why would you put someone in that room to stay? Something told me to stay up late tonight and I noticed a huge bug (see pictures) crawling on my pillow. I jumped out of bed just to find 2 smaller ones that were near me. I called the front desk and she acted like she couldn't be more bothered. It was such a hassle for her to find me a new room. She asked me what I wanted her to do about it. UGHHHHHH Move me away from this room. I made them come up and help me move my things with a cart and I had the maintenance guy help me lift the mattress in the new room to check for bugs. There weren't any. But there was no apology from either employee. No one has reached out to apologize and I am disgusted, not only by the hotel but by the lack of professionalism by the staff. If you have an infestation, DO NOT put people in that room until it's fixed. I'm currently spending hours and lots of money making sure my things aren't infested. If you can avoid this place, avoid it like the plague.
I fly into Juneau for work with a coworker. We both stayed here. I choose this hotel because of the many good ratings online. The good: the location! It is a short walk to almost everything in downtown Juneau. The staff are pretty responsive to issues. The bad: everything else. The hotel is under construction, however no one told us this at check-in. I was given room 331. The room is small and very very outdated. There was no free outlets in my room. I called the front desk and they did not believe me. I asked them to bring me a power strip. The man at the front desk quickly brought me a power strip and acknowledged that there were no power cords. He said he would let the building engineers know.. There is no controls for the temperature!!! There is a small fan in the corner of the room or you can open a window to cool the room off. I ended up sweating the entire night. The walls are pretty thin so I could hear the person in the next room snoring. I was also kept up none night by a woman who was laughing or crying at 3 am in the hallway. I called the front desk and they quickly took care of the problem. For some reasons the toilets flush really loud so you can hear when people flush the tiolets in the hall ways. The bath tub is tiny and they have these really strange bulk shampoo, conditioner, and body containers on the wall of the shower/bathtub. I did not like the fact that my room did not have that safety latch on the door that prevents someone with the key from coming into the room. This is a safety concern. The rooms are not the cleanest. I found women's hair on the blankets. Worst part for business travelers like us was that we were not able to get a receipt for our stay. They said their systems where down. Apparently they have been down for a while. What a headache it is going to be to try to get reimbursement from my employer. Honestly, after checking in I wanted to check out and find a new hotel. The reason I did not leave is because I could not for work purposes and I was afraid that this may be the best hotel in juneau.... Looking at some of these reviews I have to wonder if some of these people are being paid or if they are just fake reviews.
This place really is a dump. I had to call the front desk several times for hand soap as the room stewards said they were out. The wall are paper thin and the noise levels are intolerable. The cafe downs stairs is now closed and the main restaurant is not the same. The halibut I had for dinner was rubbery and was flavorless. Front staff including the manager are not friendly.
I really enjoyed this hotel. It backs up to the scenic mountain. I recommend getting a room on the back side of the hotel so you can see the mountain with it's snow and waterfalls, and the cute homes painted different colors. The Baranof is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and banks... killer window shopping! The restaurant within the restaurant is reasonably priced, with none of the dinner options surpassing $20. The rooms are cozy. The one thing I don't like about the hotel is that it seems like they are always doing construction. Last time I was there, 4+ months ago, they were redoing the walls of the lobby. This time they were working on hotel rooms on one of the floors and they had closed the Starbucks that used to be in the lobby. They are doing something else with the space but it is... you guessed it... under construction.
