Mourão - Guimarães

Hidden in an alleyway up some stairs. Our favourite restaurant in Guimaraes. Family atmosphere. Where the locals dine. Excellent traditional Portuguese cuisine. Not touristy, just wholesome food.

We were in Guimarães for 1 week and on the first night we found this restaurant ... well, we were actually looking for a quiet place to have dinner after a long trip from Lisbon by train. We went into a few restaurants in town but in fact most of them certainly featured very high prices for the menu and the dishes they would serve! Now, Portugal it 's like this. Portugal is fashionable and so we only see prices rising everywhere, without realising if the services they provide to the customer correspond to the amount they are requesting us to pay for. During our search, I went to a pizzeria (there are quite a few in Guimarães! and from the entrance door I noticed a sign with the name Mourão on the other side of the road. We went there and from that night on we decided we would have our dinners there while we were travelling the city. It is a traditional restaurant, serves traditional Portuguese and very tasteful foods. It 's run by a family. From the octopus to the codfish, from chicken to steak. Everything is tasty! The servings are huge, so one dosis is enough for 2 people. The owner of the restaurant is, at this time, the only employee in the room, but he responds with efficiency and lightness. He 's so friendly and talkative, although he may sometimes seem like a disgruntled person, he loves serving the customer well and offering the best food at an unusual price! Yes. This restaurant has a menu with fantastic prices, I would say, low prices. And the reason for that? Previously, this area was the Center of Guimarães. But now, the City Center has moved into the Historic Center. And there predominates the type of restaurant that practices high prices with an offer of non Portuguese dishes. And, of course, being a central place, most of the tourists end up going to these restaurants leaving out the possibility of trying local homemade foods... A special thanks to Mr Franklin for all his sympathy and dedication to the Restaurant! ... on the last day, two Dutch people entered the restaurant for dinner, but first they asked Mr Franklim if he would let them have the dinner with a dog they had adopted in those days. He easily answered Of course you can, please . Always friendly, always dedicated. The desserts? They have an amazing homemade chocolate mousse that is so tasty! For the greediest there are several desserts including fruit and options with fruits. We loved it and will definitely return when we travel again to the Crib of Portugal.

It is a family-run restarant service could be slow if there are suddenly many customers. We discovered this place by chance were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food served as well as the nice table dressing in a hidden away restaurant. We had chef's choice cod, omelette with cured ham half a bottle of Alentejo red wine. The appetizer was olives cod pasties. They were on the house. The food wine were good. The price reasonable. We were so happy with the food that we went back for dinner. This time, the appetizer was 3 types of bread, butter cream cheese. For mains, we had grilled hake veal with mushrooms, to go with our Alentejo white. The veal was good, cooked just right, to go with plain rice. The grilled fish was less flavoursome than the cod. I also didn't quite like the bolied vegetables served with the cod. But since the price is most reasonable, I can't complain.

The restaurant although quite close to the main square (Toural) is a bit hidden. Nothing really remains in your mind but the food is alright and the prices are quite cheap. Enjoy!
