Macleods At The Coniston - Craven

We go out once a week for a treat (not easy in the current financial climate). We decided to visit Macleods Restaurant for lunch. The staff were great, very helpful and pleasant throughout. But we felt let down with the food. There are only 5 main courses on offer, yet one was not available (the burger) as it had not been delivered! Really, you can’t manage to have 5 options delivered and available. We both had the fish and chips, and both of us found the batter heavy and greasy, so we left the batter. Finally, we discovered on paying that a 10% tip was added without notifying us or mentioning it in any way; it was just added to the bill and then included in the total. You shouldn’t just include it in the total and it is not acceptable to put customers in the position of having to ask you to remove a tip from the bill. Money is tight enough without this type of practice, so sadly we won’t be visiting again.

I was very disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. After a wonderful time at the spa, I was looking forward to a good meal. However, the baked camembert was undercooked with raw garlic, making it solid in the middle and impossible to dip. The prawns were served at room temperature, which was concerning. Although they replaced both dishes, they were still just average. The bar staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, with the exception of one lovely and welcoming lady. It's a shame that the restaurant doesn't match the high standards of the spa. It seems like they used to be good but have lost their way. I would recommend avoiding this restaurant for now.

During our stay at The Coniston Hotel, we considered dining out in Skipton but ultimately decided to stay at the hotel. This turned out to be a great decision as David, the sommelier, made our evening truly memorable. His enthusiasm for food and wine was evident as he skillfully selected wine pairings that complemented our food choices, even though they differed from the menu suggestions. The pairings were exceptional and truly enhanced the flavors of our dishes. David's expertise made the entire dining experience even more enjoyable, and we look forward to returning in the future.

The food was exquisite and don't forget to try the wine pairing. The experience was elevated by David, who introduced me to some amazing dessert wines. I highly recommend this place.
