I ate at La Casa del Porton Rojo last night; and I ate there a few times when I visited Cordoba two years ago. The food was good back then, and it's EXCELLENT now. I had the Nautilus salad (fresh and leafy, with slivers of smoked salmon), the pizza with shrimp (langostinos), and their chocolate brownie with ice cream. The portions were generous, but I was hungry. To drink, I had a pitcher of La Casa's fresh-mint-and-ginger infused lemonade: I drank the whole liter; it was that good. The prices were very fair, especially compared to what one gets at the touristy spots.Everything was creatively put together: the textures of the salad were great; the pizza's blend of cheeses was super-tasty; and the rich, dark chocolate of the brownie perfectly balanced its complement of lightly garnished ice cream. The flavor combinations were artistic. La Casa has a bar: it looked well-stocked, but I missed out on that because I'm not into mixed drinks. The suggested special drink of the day looked interesting and attractive, though. The wine list was a good match for the menu; and if all you've had is Argentina's red wines, I suggest you give their Torrontés a try: it's a very affable white that I think goes with most dishes.La Casa also offers tapas: it's a great place to go for anything from coffee and something small, to a full meal. The menu isn't huge, but everything I've had was well thought-out, tasty, and tasteful. If all you've been to is the usual tourist places, La Casa provides a view and taste of how the Argentinian half eats and hangs out these days (Not everyone's a gaucho hunkering over slabs of beef!). La Casa's not loud; I've never seen it raucous: instead, it's a relaxing venue away from the tourist scene. (Please: if you feel the need to get drunk and sloppy, go someplace touristy.) You'll be entering an artfully adapted old house with several dining areas and some on-street dining when weather permits. Some nights, one of the larger rooms will offer live music or tango lessons; and now and then, a drawing class. Simple English, backed up with some pointing, will be adequate: the staff is friendly and patient. La Casa is close to the center of Cordoba: often, I walk there and taxi back to wherever I'm staying.
