The Peldon Plough - Colchester

While traveling to Mersea Island with our dog in the car, we decided to stop for a drink and lunch. We arrived a bit early before the pub opened, but the chef came out and asked if we were going inside, which we confirmed. He apologized for the delay and explained that the bar staff was stuck in traffic but would arrive shortly. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food we ordered was excellent. My husband enjoyed the fresh, flaky fish and chips, while I tried the delicious moinks - meatballs wrapped in bacon. The bar staff even provided a drink for our dog and helped us check the Strood Cam for safe passage. We relaxed in the rear garden, chatting with the owner who took the time to talk to us despite being busy. We highly recommend this pub for anyone visiting Mersea Island or passing through. It's a welcoming and charming establishment - a rare find these days. Thank you to all at the pub.

I visited the Peldon Plough in April and spontaneously asked if they could accommodate two of us, as it was very busy. We ended up sitting in the bar. I ordered the roast beef and my husband had the mega roast beef and turkey. The last time we were there, the gravy was exceptional, but it wasn't quite the same this time. The food was good, but only lukewarm. However, I was so hungry that I didn't want to leave any of it. All of the vegetables were fresh and the homemade Yorkshire pudding was delicious. We asked for extra gravy this time.

I stopped by this restaurant for lunch in the area and had a delicious tuna melt panini and salad. The service was friendly and welcoming. The only downside was that the pub was a bit cold and needed heating, which made the seating area uncomfortable given the awful July weather with rain.

On our travels round Colchester we have visited multiple restaurants and pubs in and around the area and the Peldon plough stood out the most. The staff went above and beyond and the food was divine. We felt so welcome and the service was great , I could not recommend more to family’s/couples.

Our first visit, great find. Lovely food friendly waitress. We will return. Helpful with gluten free options.
