Two and a half weeks ago, my wife and I dined at Restaurante da Malhadinha, a Michelin-starred establishment. We ordered four different dishes and shared them all. Later that night, I experienced severe stomach pain, which quickly escalated to vomiting and diarrhea. Early the next morning, my wife began experiencing the same symptoms, and soon after, both of us developed a fever and body aching. In the afternoon, we informed the restaurant of our condition and went to the hospital, where we were treated with various fluids and got tested. The hospital confirmed that we had contracted bacterial food poisoning. Due to our condition, we were unable to fly back to Germany as planned, forcing us to book additional accommodation and flights, extending our stay in Portugal by two days and incurring extra costs of over €1,500. The restaurant was the only place where we had a variety of raw and delicate dishes, so we suspected it as the source of the illness. The management responded by sending food samples to a lab for analysis, although the samples were taken one or two days after we had dined there. The restaurant informed us that the lab results showed no bacterial contamination. When we explained the impact this had on us and our extra expenses, the restaurant offered a refund of the dinner and a voucher for a future visit or for their shop. However, given the circumstances and additional costs we incurred, this offer was not sufficient for us. We requested they consider covering a portion of our additional expenses, but the restaurant declined. While we appreciate the effort to address our concerns, the experience as a whole was unfortunately very distressing.
