I have been coming to Boffins on and off for forty years, that is before it became Boffins. Like other reviewers I much prefer a booth. The lunch special menu has always been varied to enough to cope with those on diets, but this time the kitchen got confused about a request for dairy free. The fish came without the sauce but coated in butter. The wait staff noticed that the sparkling wine wasn't sparkling and fetched a new bottle.
The last year has been a disaster for this restaurant. The menu now parodies Courgette's exquisite multiple courses with choices, but the food is tasteless. The service is haphazard. Friendly? Maybe, if you get a student who is working his/her way through ANU. The wine list has shrunk from adequate to desperate. The University Club which points to this place as a home for its members ought to get someone in to re-evaluate its direction.
Good food, wine by the glass but not too much ambience. Convenient if you are staying at University House.
I treated myself to dinner here and enjoyed delicious medium rare eye fillet (I needed some greens with it so a side of beans and pancetta was in order) and a tasty citrus tart for dessert.Unfortunately when dining alone separate sides does make the meal a little expensive - but it was all great quality food)
